Education = Power

I found a charity, Facing History and Ourselves, that provides resources for educators that help open students' minds across the nation and aid people in recognizing prejudice in current events and throughout history so they can work to stop it. Education is a very empowering force that brings people out of ignorance and into a position where they can effectively help others. Recognizing bias in ourselves and the people around us is part of working toward a more equal society. Ignoring historical implications of racism and the often shameful ways we are all guilty of bias is dangerous and adds to the tension that eventually leads to violence like hate crime. This organization has a broad reach and various helpful online resources that examine the nature of sterotypes and racism and what we can do to stop these things. In addition, the federal government collects data each year on hate crimes and their prevalence in the U.S. and displays this information online, which could be a good resource.

  1. Education is a really important part of any organization's effectiveness. They have to be able to properly educate people about their cause and why it's important for other people to care about it, and often in a small enough bite of information that passers-by can take in and understand.

    In this case, this cause can gain momentum in school systems with the help of teachers supporting and teaching the ideas of the organization and explaining things in a way that students can understand.

  2. I agree that education plays a huge part in how powerful an organization can be and even how powerful a single person is because if you don't have the facts and can be able to answer the questions that people throw at you then how will your cause get any backing. I also really agree that people really do not know that are being ignorant because it is just the way that they were taught and that we need to teach them that what the are doing is wrong. People are equal no matter what color their skin is or where they came from and we have come a long way from where we were in history but things still are not the way they are suppose to be. Many people still face racism and hate crimes everyday and something needs to be done. I love the ideas and things that this organization is doing because peoples' eyes need to be opened to what is going on today.
